Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures offer patients with extensive tooth loss the opportunity to restore their smile in a single appointment. This treatment is recommended for patients who are missing most of their teeth and require extractions for any remaining teeth. Immediate dentures can be placed as soon as teeth have been extracted, so you can leave the office feeling confident in your appearance.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

The best candidates for immediate dentures include patients who:

  • Have severe tooth decay or a widespread dental infection
  • Are missing the majority of their teeth
  • Are looking for an immediate solution to tooth loss
  • Have been diagnosed with aggressive periodontal disease and require complete tooth extraction

To determine whether you qualify for immediate dentures, your dentist will conduct a thorough examination and review your goals for treatment.

Immediate dentures provide an excellent solution for patients who are self-conscious about being without teeth.

Initial Consultation

During the initial consultation, your dentist may request digital x-rays or other advanced images for a comprehensive picture of your teeth, gums, and jawbone. These scans will also be used to plan your treatment. It is important to come prepared with questions and be ready to discuss your medical history.

Fabrication of Immediate Dentures

Prior to extraction, digital or traditional impressions will be taken. These molds will then be sent to a dental laboratory, where skilled technicians will craft your dentures. Immediate dentures are typically made from acrylic dental polymers, color-matched to provide realistic, yet durable results. In most cases, the turnaround time is about two to three weeks.

Tooth Extraction and Denture Placement

On the day of tooth extraction, your gums will be numbed using local anesthesia. If you are especially nervous about treatment, your dentist may offer stronger forms of sedation. Once teeth are removed, the immediate denture will be inserted. Since this is the first time your prosthetic will be placed over the gums, temporary linings or tissue conditioners may be required to provide a better fit.

Recovery and Maintenance

It is vital that you follow all postsurgical instructions. Immediate dentures should be worn constantly for three days. Removing the denture beforehand could cause gums to swell, making it difficult or impossible to reinsert. Keep in mind that it may be necessary to reline your dentures after your gums fully heal if they become uncomfortable.

After tooth loss or extraction, your gums and jawbone will naturally begin to recede. Regular check-ups will allow the dentist to monitor your results and replace linings as needed. Six to 12 months after your gums heal, a permanent liner can be designed and inserted into the denture to improve the fit.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Immediate Dentures

While immediate dentures can help you maintain, as well as improve, the appearance of your smile, there are also drawbacks to consider. Immediate dentures are crafted prior to extraction. As a result, it is possible that the denture will fit improperly due to swelling. In addition, dentures will need to be adjusted or even replaced in the future, as the shape of your jaw changes.

Immediate dentures provide an excellent solution for patients who are self-conscious about being without teeth. These restorations can immediately restore dental function and the form of your smile, as well as provide relief from decay or infection.
